A hike through history and nature is planned for Saturday in honor of George Washington’s birthday and his journey through the region. Hikers will meet re-enactors portraying Washington and his guide Christopher Gist, as well as Native Americans the two encountered. The event starts at 8:45 a.m. Exhibits and the re-enactor encampment will be closed about 2 p.m. at Jennings Environmental Education Center, 2951 Prospect Road, Brady Township. Succop Nature Park, 185 W. Airport Road, Penn Township, hosts free birding and nature hikes with a naturalist at 9 a.m. Thursdays. Trails open from dawn to dusk. Call 412-963-6100 or visit www.aswp.org.

Jennings Environmental Education Center, Route 528, Brady Township, will host “A Tick in Time Saves Lyme” from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday; no registration is needed. A program on Backyard Maple Sugaring will be from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Feb. 27; registration is needed. Registration is available at events.dcnr.pa.gov or by calling 724-794-6011.

Moraine State Park, Muddy Creek Township, will host a winter hike for veterans and their families from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday starting at Pavilion 1 on the South Shore. “River Otters Don’t Use Sleds – But You Can!” will be presented from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Pavilion 1 on the South Shore. Take sleds and dress for the weather. The event will be canceled if weather is severe. A “Growing Up WILD” teacher workshop will be from 9 a.m. to noon April 9 at the Outdoor Center on the North Shore.
