SV tests flexible schedule
The Seneca Valley School District on Friday held a test run of its flexible instruction day that will allow students to still have a school day when there is severe weather.
Seneca Valley is one of the first districts in the region to get state approval for flexible days.
Students stay at home On the flexible days, but work on a combination of online and written assignments from their teachers.
If students do not complete their assignments that day, they have 10 days to make it up for full credit.
Administrators will gather feedback on the day’s effectiveness after the 10-day window to turn in the assignments has passed, said Linda Andreassi, director of communications.
Most of the district’s teachers posted online their assignments or a message listing what students were to work on during the day. Some even recorded a video of themselves telling students what they should do.
Students with special needs will have specially designed lessons on the flexible days. Special education personnel will be available to answer questions by telephone or e-mail during the day, according to a question and answer page on the district’s website.
If the day works well, the Seneca Valley will use flexible days during the 2016-17 school year so it would not have to extend the year with makeup snow days.
