Baby born in parking lot expected to go home today

After a stressful birth in the parking lot of the Butler Memorial Hospital, Liam McElravy and his mother of Chicora are healthy and are expected to be discharged from the hospital today.

Liam was born at 9 p.m., at 7 pounds, 8 ounces and 20.5 inches, and although he was blue and cold at the time of birth, Liam is doing well.

Parents Whitney and Ben McElravy were on their way to the hospital when her water broke. Whitney’s contractions had just been getting bad when they left for the hospital, and Whitney’s midwife advised them that they probably had time to wait before going to the hospital.

“They say your second (child) comes quicker, but I didn’t know it would be that quick,” Whitney McElravy said, who has a daughter, Kaylee, almost 2 years old,

When Ben was driving, there was substantial snow and he had to drive well below the speed limit, he said.

“I had tunnel vision,” he said. “I caught myself holding my breath on the way there.”

Ben added that the drive was “terrifying” and he said his knuckles were white on the steering wheel.

Although Whitney was in labor for 19 hours when Kaylee was born, she could feel Liam’s head when they were only a mile away from the hospital, she said.

Despite being born in 15 degree weather and needing heating blankets at the hospital, Liam will be just fine, the parents said.
