Game Commission to trap sickly bearKITTANNING — The Pennsylvania Game Commission is trying to trap a sickly bear spotted recently.Game commission officials believe the bear has the mange, a skin condition caused by parasites that cause the animal to lose its coat. The game commission made that determination based on pictures snapped by residents who have spotted the bear near Kittanning recently.The game commission is concerned because the mange can spread to other animals and even humans.That’s why they’re urging people to stay away from the bear and to report it if they see the animal.Bears can recover from the mange with proper treatment. But the animal may have to be euthanized if it’s lost too much hair.

Man crashes into cruiser, faces DUIPITTSBURGH — A man who crashed into the rear of a police cruiser making a traffic stop just north of Pittsburgh will face drunken driving and other charges.State police aren’t releasing the name of the driver, who remained hospitalized today.They say he was driving north on Interstate 279 in Ross Township when he ran into the rear of one of two police cruisers, which were stopped on the side of the highway while another motorist was being cited. That happened about 10 p.m. Wednesday.The officers were out of their vehicles and not hurt. But the driver of the pickup which hit the cruiser was ejected when the truck flipped and wound up in the southbound lanes.

Floating classroom to relaunch in Pgh.PITTSBURGH — An environmentally friendly floating classroom will relaunch later this year on Pittsburgh-area rivers.Rivers of Steel Heritage Corp. and RiverQuest have found a way to keep the unique, 90-foot boat operating.The boat has been tied up at its dock next to the USS Requin Submarine since RiverQuest suspended operations last summer. Rivers of Steel has acquired RiverQuest’s assets, which consist primarily of the Voyager, a custom-built, hybrid-diesel-powered boat that has hosted educational programs for students since 2009.
