Fallen wires close Freeport Bridge
ALLEGHENY TWP, Westmoreland County — The Freeport Bridge reopened between 7:30 and 8 p.m. Monday after being closed for most of the day due to downed electrical lines.
The bridge, which carries Route 356 over the Allegheny River just east of Freeport, closed about 11 a.m. when a truck carrying an oversized load took down utility lines at Route 356 and Key Lane in the township.
The bridge is at the corner of four counties — Butler, Allegheny, Armstrong and Westmoreland.
Chief Jeff Weaver of the Freeport Volunteer Fire Department said his department kept traffic off the bridge on the north side of the Allegheny River, which partially is in Buffalo Township.
He said that traffic trying to cross the bridge was heavy. Allegheny Township Police Chief John Fontaine said the detour took traffic about 15 miles around the bridge. He said the traffic control effort involved multiple fire and police departments and two PennDOT district offices.
Weaver said cars had to be rerouted down Freeport Road, across the Tarentum Bridge and up Route 56.
