Adams Twp named safe community
ADAMS TWP — Residents here can rest easier than ever, as the township has been named the third-safest municipality in the United States.
Consumeraffairs.com analyzed FBI and U.S Census Bureau data from
2014 to come up with the top 10 safest cities, and Adams earned the respectable ranking.
Coming in third after Hopkinton, Mass., and Clark Township, N.J., Adams’ enjoyed a 90 percent drop in its burglary rate between 2013 and 2014, the consumeraffairs.com report states.
Crimes per day in the 13,000-resident township was listed as 0.35 per day, and police officers per 10,000 residents was six. Hopkinton’s listing for officers per 10,000 residents is 16, and Clark Township 33.
Linda Lees, the township supervisor in charge of the police department, said the status nicely bookmarks the career of longtime police Chief Bill Westerman, who will retire on Friday.
“What a perfect send off for Bill,” Lees said upon hearing of the listing.
The four other supervisors were surprised to learn at Monday’s township meeting that Adams had earned the nationwide status.
“It’s amazing, and goes to show how well we protect our citizens in Adams Township,” said supervisor Russ Ford.
Supervisor Tom Franceschina said the status is the result of the supervisors working closely with the police to provide a safe township.
Two other Pennsylvania municipalities that made the list are Logan Township in Blair County, in 4th place and the area covered by Eastern Adams Regional Police in Adams County in nineth place.
