Council settles with man wrongly jailedPITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh City Council introduced legislation to pay $10,000 to a city man who was jailed for 36 days after a witness wrongly identified him as a bakery robber.The legislation was introduced Tuesday to settle the lawsuit filed by 28-year-old DeAndre Brown, a library security guard.Police arrested and jailed Brown after a bakery clerk identified Brown, saying he recognized Brown as a regular customer during the September 2013 robbery of Dana’s Bakery.Brown sued saying police charged him even after surveillance video, sign-in sheets, and witnesses confirmed he was at a work-related seminar at the time of the robbery. Allegheny County prosecutors eventually dropped the charges.City Council must still vote to approve the settlement, and Mayor Bill Peduto must then sign the measure.

Bicentennial being planned PITTSBURGH — Mayor Bill Peduto and the head of a regional history museum have outlined plans to celebrate Pittsburgh’s bicentennial.The city was founded in 1758 and celebrated that 250th anniversary eight years ago. This year’s celebrations commemorate the 200th anniversary of Pittsburgh’s incorporation as a city in 1816.After celebrating the actual anniversary on March 18, the city will also host three other “signature” events. A parade in July will feature descendants of the city’s 63 mayors. Light-Up Night and First Night Pittsburgh will also include bicentennial celebrations.
