Winterfest set at park Saturday
MUDDY CREEK TWP — Snow or no snow, Moraine State Park will have accommodations Saturday for either scenario for the 6th annual Winterfest.
Jake Weiland, assistant park manager, said recent temperatures have cast doubt on whether they will be able to have winter-specific activities, including use of the lake.
“As of right now the water temperature is 39 degrees,” he said Friday.
Weiland said the lake is a safety concern even if there are colder temperatures.
“Last year at this time, we had 12 inches of ice,” he said. “This year we don’t have any.”
The temperatures this week are expected to be below freezing at night and in the 30s during the day. On Saturday, the high should be in the mid 30s.
Weiland said safety is the park’s main concern, and the lake will be monitored.
“If there’s any question of a doubt, we won’t let anyone on the ice,” he said.
Weiland said there are a number of activities that still occur regardless of the temperature, including a 5K run or walk, a heated tent with vendors and the chili cook-off.
Weiland said the 5K is new this year, and it is unique because there usually aren’t any 5K events at this time of year. He said the combination of the 5K and other scheduled hikes will offer participants new perspectives on the park.
Weiland said a main focus for organizers is on the heated tent with the vendors.
“This year is the first year we’ve filled it with all vendors,” he said.
Weiland said last year’s Winterfest drew nearly 5,000 visitors, which caught organizers off guard, but this year they are more prepared.
“Last year, we literally ran out of food,” he said. “(This year,) you name it, we’re gonna’ have it.”
Weiland said he is confident he will be able to better satisfy visitors this year with the increases in activities, food and vendors.
“This year, I would anticipate 5,000 participants, if not more,” he said.
