Truck driver sentenced to probation
PITTSBURGH — An Armstrong County truck driver has been sentenced in federal court to five years of probation with six months home detention after he worked as a truck driver while collecting social security disability benefits.
Billy Joe Toy, 45, of Worthington on Tuesday was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Terrence F. McVerry. He was convicted of theft of government property.
According to court records, Toy received social security disability payments based on his alleged inability to do gainful activity.
He received more than $55,000 in benefits while working as a truck driver and concealed his compensation for the payment of his wages to his wife’s business.
McVerry stated that the crime typically warrants imprisonment, but he said Toy’s history and characteristics merited his sentence.
