Man who fled police to get prison time, probation

Robert Amend

The man whose evasion from police left residents in the Chicora area scared and on edge for nearly a week will round out his visits to the county with an appearance in sentence court next month.

On Feb. 4, 49-year-old Robert Amend of Pittsburgh will be sentenced in Butler County Court on a felony count of fleeing or attempting to elude police officers and a misdemeanor count of reckless endangerment.

In exchange for Amend’s guilty plea in November, the Butler County District Attorney’s office will recommend that Judge William Shaffer sentence Amend to serve 11 1/2 to 23 months in state prison, followed by five years of probation.

The sentencing will mark the end of Amend’s responsibilities in Butler County Court, but only the beginning of his court issues.

In Allegheny County, Amend still will face the more serious allegations, including attempted homicide, that set him on the run in the first place.

Police allege Amend on Aug. 8 shot of his 40-year-old estranged girlfriend, who had recently taken out a protection-from-abuse order against him.

Amend allegedly fled the shooting. He ended up in Butler County, and after a high-speed chase in the Oakland Township area, he fled on foot into the woods.

A manhunt followed but Amend avoided capture. He remained free for five more days before turning himself in at the Pittsburgh Municipal Courts Building in Pittsburgh.

He remains in the Allegheny County Jail on $250,000 bail. His next appearance in that court is next week.
