Suspects sought in EC shooting

Jahote Dorsey
Butler man faces charges

EVANS CITY — Police are seeking two men — one known and one unknown — in connection with a suspected drug rip-off scheme that left a borough man hospitalized with a gunshot wound.

Evans City-Seven Fields Regional Police believe Jahote C. Dorsey Jr., 21, of Butler and his accomplice planned to rob Oliver Philogene when they went to his home in Evans City Saturday night.

The suspects were not about to leave empty-handed, said Police Chief Joe McCombs, and they intended to kill the 21-year-old victim.

But Philogene, after having the 9 mm pistol pointed at this head, grabbed the gun, which went off and hit him in the right forearm. He was listed Monday in stable condition at a Pittsburgh hospital, authorities said.

Based on the police investigation, District Judge Sue Haggerty on Sunday issued an arrest warrant for Dorsey on attempted first-degree murder, robbery and other charges.

Investigators have not identified Dorsey’s accomplice, who they believe fired the shot.

Police learned of the shooting shortly before 8 p.m. after Philogene showed up at UPMC Passavant in Cranberry Township with a gunshot wound.

“He arrived at the hospital, but we don’t know if he drove himself or if someone else drove him there.” McCombs said.

Officers spoke to him at the hospital before he was transferred to UPMC Presbyterian for further treatment.

McCombs said Philogene has been “somewhat cooperative” with the investigation.

Police Monday planned to get a search warrant for Philogene’s cell phone that could assist in the investigation. They would not elaborate.

McCombs disclosed that “an hour or two before” the shooting, Philogene and Dorsey had “a conversation.” Police do not know what the men talked about.

During questioning by police, Philogene said he believed Dorsey was coming over to smoke marijuana with him, according to court documents.

However, investigators suspect Dorsey and his accomplice went to the victim’s apartment looking for drugs.

McCombs said Philogene’s girlfriend, who he did not identify, is listed as the sole tenant on the lease.

Philogene recalled that he heard a knock at the door and saw Dorsey through the peep hole, documents said. He opened the door, believing no one else was there.

But moments later, the victim recounted, he spotted another man — armed with a gun — with Dorsey. The other man, who Philogene said he did not know, pointed the pistol at his head.

The gunman and Dorsey demanded, “Give me everything you have,’” according to a police affidavit.

When Philogene told the suspects he didn’t have anything, Dorsey allegedly issued an instruction to his accomplice: “Just shoot him.”

“That’s when the victim tried to disarm the gunman,” McCombs said. “As (Philogene) lunged for the weapon, it went off.”

Investigators believe the bullet traveled through Philogene’s forearm; however, police did not find the slug after searching the apartment.

After the gun fired, Dorsey fled, McCombs said. The gunman did likewise a short time later after the victim managed to wrestle away the pistol.

Philogene put the gun in a bag and placed it outside the home. Officers found the pistol and identified its owner.

Police said they want to question the owner, described only as a Butler County man, because the owner had not reported the gun stolen and the gun was used in a crime, McCombs said.

He said the owner is not currently considered a suspect in the investigation.

Police later conducted a consent search of the victim’s apartment.

“Officers recovered money and drugs,” said McCombs, who would not specify what drugs and how much money was found.

He also declined to release any physical description of Dorsey’s purported accomplice.

Dorsey is charged with attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder of the first degree, aggravated assault and conspiracy to commit aggravated assault, and robbery, all felonies.

Butler police are assisting the Evans City-Seven Fields Regional Police Department in the investigation. City police are familiar with Dorsey and know some of his hangouts and associates.

Just four days before the shooting, Butler police arrested Dorsey after he allegedly assaulted a woman during an apparent domestic dispute. He allegedly punched the woman in the mouth at her home Dec. 29.

Dorsey was arraigned on a charge of simple assault and placed in Butler County Prison. But he posted $3,000 bail Wednesday, and was released.
