Rottweiler owners charged

Dogs attacked Fairview woman

FAIRVIEW TWP — Three months after a 70-year-old woman was attacked by a neighbor’s two Rottweilers, the dogs’ owners have been charged criminally.

“I just feel bad this happened. She’s a friend, and she’s home now,” said dog owner Kathrine Hilliard, 53.

She and her husband Verrel Hilliard, 53, of 433 Cherry Road each face a misdemeanor charge of dog attack causing serious injury.

According to court records, the couple’s neighbor, Martha Crawford, was attacked by the 170-pound dogs as she approached their home to deliver mail.

Crawford, who could not be reached for comment, was treated at ACMH Hospital for arm and leg injuries.

Katherine Hilliard said her dogs, 10-year-old Max and 9-year-old Sassy, had broken loose before, but had never bitten anyone.

She said her property is marked with no trespassing signs and the dogs didn’t become aggressive until Crawford came onto her property.

Katherine Hilliard alleges the dogs had a negative experience with Crawford a year earlier when they got loose and went onto Crawford’s property.

“Dogs don’t forget,” Katherine Hilliard said.

State police could not be reached to elaborate about the charges.

Katherine Hilliard said that after the alleged incident she was ordered to quarantine the animals for 10 days. But they never left her possession and remain there still.

According to court documents, Hilliard in 2011 pleaded guilty to a summary charge of not keeping a dog confined on her property.
