Esther Ruth Durnell

Esther Ruth Durnell, 90, of Slippery Rock, Worth Township, passed away Wednesday at the Trinity Living Center, Grove City.

Esther was born June 23, 1925, in Sewickley to Frederick George Hacker and Edith Viola Snyder Hacker. She married Charles Edward Durnell on Nov. 13, 1948, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 9, 2015.

She worked as a custodian for off-campus housing at Slippery Rock University through the McGinley Agency.

She was a member of the West Liberty United Methodist Church. She was a longtime owner along with her husband of the Durnell Greenhouse in Worth Township.

Her hobbies included gardening, hunting, fishing, woodworking, bingo and bowling. She competed in the Women's Bowling League in Slippery Rock as well as local and state tournaments.

Survivors include her son, Dennis C. Durnell and his wife, Pam, of Grove City; two daughters, Barbara L. Studebaker of Grove City and Jeanne L. Dickey and her husband, Paul, of Slippery Rock; eight grandchildren, Stacy L. Bluedorn, Trista B. Dennison, Gregory A. Studebaker, Melissa S. Schulz, Eric M. Studebaker, Michael A. Studebaker, Shelby R. Erb and Ryan C. Durnell; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews, including her niece and beloved caretaker, Geraldine Dixon.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters, Thelma Siebke and Gladys Getz; and two brothers, John and Edward Hacker.

DURNELL — The family of Esther Ruth Durnell, who died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2015, will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Smith Funeral Home, 421 New Castle St., Slippery RockFuneral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. Nelson Thayer, pastor of the West Liberty United Methodist Church, presiding.
