E. Brady group touts recreation

Walking tour set for next month

EAST BRADY — Volunteers here have formed a new group with the goal of highlighting the borough’s recreational infrastructure, and they plan to host a walking tour of the municipality next month.

The group, East Brady Trail and River Town Action Team, will hold a meeting Tuesday at the Allegheny Hills Retirement Residence, which is near the center of the borough.

The goal, said Toni Henry, director of East Brady Area Development Corp., is to gain public input on what can be done to make the borough more attractive to people who want to bike, hike and use the Allegheny River.

East Brady is near about 30 miles of the Armstrong Trail, 41 miles of the Redbank Trail, and has about nine miles of boatable river, which Henry said need to be highlighted more effectively.

“We’ve got some work to do, but I think the timing is right here,” she said. “We’ve been waiting for the right time.

The group will have its walking tour of East Brady and some of the borough’s recreational infrastructure at 1 p.m. Jan. 23. It will begin at the retirement home, and include trailheads and the downtown.

Henry said the group is recruiting people to take part in that event, which will culminate in a formal assessment of recreation in the borough. The group will meet Wednesday to adopt an assessment form which will be used to gather the public’s input.

“We want people who have lived here all their lives; people who are visitors; seasonal residents. The goal is to see how easy it is for people to get off the trail and into town,” Henry said. “We want people to visit our town and businesses, and support our community.”

Henry said the group will discuss options related to recreation, but wants to focus on projects that can be completed in the near-term.

“It’s nice to dream big, but right now we’re looking at what we can accomplish in the next year,” Henry said.

She said the group has already received some input, such as requests for more signs directing people between trailheads and downtown, improvements to the borough’s boat launch area, and adding bike lanes to borough roads.

The Action Team is made up of residents and representatives from social service clubs, borough government and recreation associations.
