SV softball players make showcaseJACKSON TWP — Seneca Valley freshmen Karli Hacker and Claire Zimmerman were recently selected to compete in the Queen of Diamonds (fast-pitch softball) Showcase North Jan. 9-10 at Kent State University.Now in its 20th season, the QDSN receives more than 2,400 applicants from 21 sates and two Canadian provinces and accepts 364.Hacker was selected as a third baseman, Zimmerman as a pitcher. Both play travel softball for Steel City Select in Warrendale. The two have been playing softball together for seven years.
O'Donnell named player of weekPITTSBURGH — Butler graduate and La Roche College junior women's basketball player Mackenzie O'Donnell has been named Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Player of the Week.O'Donnell scored 25 points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked five shots in a 66-48 win over Westminster. She scored 21 points and snared nine rebounds in a 72-61 win over Washington & Jefferson.O'Donnell is averaging 14.7 points and 7.1 rebounds per game this season.
Sabres’ Kane says he’s innocentBUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo Sabres forward Evander Kane said he has done nothing wrong and is looking forward to clearing his name amid a sex offense investigation.Kane spoke for about 30 seconds in the Sabres locker room following the team’s morning skate before its game against the Washington Capitals. It was the first time Kane was able to comment since The Buffalo News was the first to report a day earlier that he was the subject of the investigation by Buffalo police. Kane said he respects the legal process and noted there’s little more that he can talk about. Kane was matter of fact and spoke calmly in front of a large crowd of reporters. He did not take questions.
Grizzlies’ Barnes suspended 2 gamesNEW YORK — The NBA suspended Memphis Grizzlies forward Matt Barnes two games without pay for what the league said was a “physical altercation” with Derek Fisher and for “threatening” the New York Knicks coach in October.The league investigated the Oct. 3 incident in Redondo Beach, California, between Barnes and Fisher — former teammates with the Los Angeles Lakers from 2010-12.The Grizzlies had just wrapped up a week of training camp, and a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press in October the incident occurred while Fisher attended a gathering at the home of Barnes’ estranged wife, Gloria Govan..Barnes’ suspension will begin Tuesday night when the Grizzlies host Miami and includes Saturday night’s game at Utah.
