Susan Louise Wiley Hardwick
Susan Louise Wiley Hardwick, 70, passed away Nov. 11.
Susan was born May 9, 1945, in Greensburg, to Mildred (Fisher) Wiley and Asa G. Wiley Jr.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Asa and Mildred Wiley; and her brother, Richard G. Wiley.
Survivors include her husband, Donald Holtgrieve of Eugene, Ore.; and her three sons, James C. Book of Eugene, Ore., David B. Book of Pacific Grove, Calif., and Randal Scott Book of Bellingham, Wash.; her sister, Nancy A. Book of Slippery Rock; and her grandchildren, Paige Book, Austin Book and Annabelle Book.
Susan graduated from Slippery Rock High School in 1963 and received her bachelor's degree in education and social science and geography from Slippery Rock University in 1967. She went on to earn a master's degree in geography from California State University, Chico, in 1974 and then was awarded her doctoral degree in geography from the University of California, Davis.
Susan Hardwick began her teaching career in 1968 at Honcut Middle School in Oroville, Calif., then went on to teach at Cosumnes River College in Sacramento, Calif., from 1974 to 1986.
From 1986 to 1997, Dr. Hardwick become professor of geography at California State University, Chico, then from 1997 to 2000 she continued her career at Texas State University, and finished her extraordinary career in the geography department at the University of Oregon.
As a teacher, scholar and administrator Susan wrote seven books, 23 referenced articles in professional journals and prepared 15 book chapters for various publications.
Susan won many awards for scholarship, service, teaching effectiveness, leadership and student mentoring.
Her personal interests included the well-being of her family, especially her grandchildren, nonfiction writing and world travel.
Susan's adventures with her husband, Donald Holtgrieve, were in all parts of North America, as well as Europe, Russia, Southeast Asia and parts of Central and South America. They also enjoyed the blustery central Oregon coast, where they lived in their Newport condominium.
HARDWICK — A celebration of life for Susan Louise Wiley Hardwick, who died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2015, was conducted Nov. 21 at the University of Oregon's Lillis Hall.Susan's ashes were spread along several mountain streams, places where her love of the natural world now blends with our brief human presence in it.
