County will start renting courthouse for weddingsPITTSBURGH — Allegheny County will begin charging a fee to rent areas of the historic courthouse for weddings and other gatherings.Council members approved an ordinance this month for the fee for rental of parts of the courthouse and county office building for private occasions.County manager William McKain said “people keep calling” about holding weddings at the National Historic Landmark. The county plans to market the sites through tourism agencies and social media.Before the ordinance, the county received only out-of-pocket reimbursements for private events, such as the cost to staff a building guard, electrician or custodian.There will still be no charge for those getting married in brief ceremonies during regular courthouse hours, as long as they don’t interfere with courthouse business.

Airspace around bridge cleared for demolitionPITTSBURGH — Authorities said drones would be banned from the airspace around a bridge during its demolition today.The Greenfield Bridge is more than 90 years old and carries traffic above the interstate locally known as the Parkway East. It’s been closed since October and will be replaced by a new span scheduled to open by May 2017.The old bridge was scheduled to come down in a controlled implosion at about 9 a.m. today.The city’s public safety department says a temporary flight restriction “for manned and unmanned aerial systems” will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today, extending 2,999 feet in the air and one-half nautical mile — 3,038 feet — around the demolition site.
