Record highs grace Butler skies
Butler County had record-high temperatures this weekend.
Temperatures on Saturday in Butler peaked at 65 degrees, matching the record high mark set in 1979, according the National Weather Service.
On Sunday, the high was 65, which broke a record. The previous record was 61 degrees in 1972.
Sunday also broke the record for the highest low temperature, with a low of 46. The previous record was 40 degrees in 1983.
The temperatures were twice as high as they were last year on the same dates.
While scattered showers passed through the county Saturday, some people took advantage of the unseasonably warm weather by visiting parks.
“It’s definitely nice to be able to go outside on Dec. 12,” said George Pfender of Summit Township.
Pfender and his wife, Stacie, took their 3-year-old daughter, Gracie, to the playground at Alameda Park.
Pfender said he was happy he didn’t have to worry about winter chores like shoveling snow.
“I’m hoping the grass doesn’t start growing,” he joked.
Mike Langnecker of Gibsonia and his wife, Jane, were bicycling at Moraine State Park.
“We’re looking to get some exercise and taking advantage of the great weather,” he said. “We virtually never get to bike this late in the year.”
Brian Hutchinson of Pittsburgh was with his friends at the park playing disc golf.
“The weather’s good, though we’re not necessarily shooting good,” he said.
Jason Zaperach of Pittsburgh said the trio plays disc golf multiple times per month and often visits the park regardless of weather.
“The only time we don’t play is in the rain,” said Zaperach, who goes by “J-Zap” on the course.
Temperatures will remain in the 60s today but will begin to fall throughout the week.
The low tonight is expected to be 43 with wind chill as low as 37. The chance of rain is 80 percent.
The forecast for this coming weekend is temperatures back to the low 30s.
