SRU women drop tight 79-77 decision

SLIPPERY ROCK — Kailee Howe sank a jumper with three seconds remaining Wednesday afternoon at Morrow Field House, handing visiting West Liberty a 79-77 women's basketball victory over Slippery Rock.

The 21st-ranked Hilltoppers (5-1) fell behind by 15 points early, but rallied behind a bevy of 3-pointers to take a 65-52 lead entering the fourth quarter. SRU (4-2) used a 19-6 run at that point to knot the game at 71.

A lay-up by Erica Aiello tied the game at 77 for The Rock with 27 seconds left before Howe hit her winning shot.

Howe had 17 assists for West Liberty, which sank 15 treys on 35 attempts. Emily Bucon scored 22 points— including six 3-pointers — while Kierra Simpson had 15 points and 18 rebounds.

Sophomore guard Ciara Patterson paced SRU with 18 points and three steals. Junior guard Lexi Carpenter added 17 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals while junior guard Audrey Stapleton had 14 points.

SRU fell to 0-6 all-time against West Liberty, but is off to its best start in 11 years. The Rock travels to Central State (Ohio) for a 2 p.m. game Saturday.

That game will begin a five-game road trip for the Rock women. SRU's next home game is at 5 p.m. Dec. 16 against Mercyhurst.
