Mars board rejects bid for former Middlesex school

ADAMS TWP — The lone bidder for the former Middlesex Elementary School learned Tuesday night that $75,000 is not enough to buy the school.

Brenda Henwood, who, with her husband, Scott, submitted the only bid for the building on Browns Hill Road, heard the school board vote to reject the bid.

“That bid is lower than our lowest appraisal,” said board President Dayle Ferguson.

Ferguson said the board got two appraisals on the large building for $500,000 and $602,000, respectively.

The Henwoods had asked the board in October to reveal the appraisal amounts, but district solicitor Tom King said bids might have come in above the appraisal amounts and the district wanted to get the highest amount possible for the property.

Ferguson said Tuesday night the district will again entertain bids for the building. She said the “highest and best bids of $500,000 or more” would be considered.

If no such bids arrive by Dec. 1, Ferguson said the matter would move to county court.

Ferguson said a judge would hold a public hearing and consider the bids submitted plus any other bids offered after the deadline.

The Henwoods requested copies of the two appraisals on the building, and were told to contact Superintendent Wesley Shipley for them.

The school district’s special education and pupil services departments are housed at the former elementary school.

Those departments will move to the administration offices adjacent to the primary center on Route 228 once an upcoming renovation project there is complete.

Brenda Henwood’s brother, Don Marshall, said at the Nov. 6 bid opening his family donated the land the school is on.

The school was built in 1911 as a high school, long before the Mars School District was formed.
