Ten Butler County boys soccer players have been named All-Section 2-AA for their play this season.
Four Mars seniors — forwards Cole Ferguson and Andrew Diefenbacher, midfielder Nick Cimini and goalkeeper Dale Glavin — along with junior defender Caleb Brake, are on the team.
Knoch senior forwards Val Panger and Kris Matus, and goalkeeper Stephen Grumski, earned all-section as did Freeport senior midfielders Mario Borino and Patrick McNulty.
Brueckner, LoPresti earn PSAC honorsMars graduate and Gannon University senior Mani Brueckner was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Athlete of the Year Wednesday.Brueckner led the PSAC in points (41), goals (17) and was tied for second in assists (seven).Brueckner also was a first-team All-PSAC selection.Karns City graduate and Seton Hill freshman Emily LoPresti also was named to the third team.LoPresti led the team in goals with nine and in points with 22.LoPresti led the conference in shots per game at 4.33.
Kaepernick benched by struggling 49ersSANTA CLARA, Calif. — Three years after Colin Kaepernick led the San Francisco 49ers on a Super Bowl run, coach Jim Tomsula decided his struggling quarterback needed a break and his dormant offense needed a change.Tomsula announced Blaine Gabbert will take over the starting role from Kaepernick this week against Atlanta. The 49ers (2-6) have failed to score a touchdown three times in the past five games and have been held under 200 yards of offense in four of eight games.
Tar Heels lose senior guard PaigeTop-ranked North Carolina lost senior guard Marcus Paige to a broken right hand for three to four weeks.The school announced Paige’s injury, saying the preseason Atlantic Coast Conference co-player of the year broke a bone in his non-shooting hand during Tuesday’s practice.Paige, a 6-foot-2 guard, has led UNC in scoring each of the past two seasons.
Greinke opts out of $71 million dealNEW YORK — Dodgers ace Zack Greinke opted out of the final three years of his contract with Los Angeles, giving up a guaranteed $71 million to become a free agent again.The 32-year-old right-hander was 19-3 with a major league-best 1.66 ERA this season, when he struck out 200 in 222 2-3 innings.
Broken clavicle sidelines McDavidEDMONTON, Alberta — Edmonton Oilers rookie Connor McDavid is expected to be sidelined for months with a broken left clavicle, according to general manager Peter Chiarelli.Chiarelli said McDavid will require surgery after breaking his collarbone in Tuesday night’s 4-2 win over Philadelphia. The first overall pick in this year’s draft was hurt after he crashed into the boards.McDavid had 12 points in 12 games and was selected the NHL’s rookie of the month for October.
