It’s the season for pumpkins, zombies and witches — also, the last of the colorful fall foliage for this year.

That’s a great combination for this Saturday’s Harrison Hills Trail Run 5k/ 10k.

Harrison Hills Park, one of the nine parks maintained by Allegheny County, encompasses 500 wooded acres in the northeast corner of the county. It features stunning views from the bluffs above the Allegheny River, quiet ponds, children’s play areas and an environmental learning center. It also includes 14 miles of trails perfect for hiking, biking or running.

Harrison Hills Halloween 5k/ 10k uses these trails in separate loop courses. This year’s 10k will run on a portion of Rachel Carson Trail which has its eastern terminus just outside the park.

Neither the 5k nor 10k will be very technical, but the 10k includes double the elevation change of the 5k route. Hikers, walkers, babies in backpacks and leashed dogs are welcome to participate in an untimed event at a discounted price.

For competitive runners, Harrison Hills 5k/10k offers awards to top three male and female finishers at each distance and age group awards from 14 and Under through 70+. Race director Spencer Clark’s wife Grace, a trail runner and triathlete, expects up to 400 participants in the day’s events based on preregistration numbers.

Grace is the proprietor of Grace’s Wok and will be cooking the postrace meal of a choice of fried rice and spring roll or vegetarian chili and chips. There’s also a buffet of homemade desserts and punch and cider.

This event is more than a race — it’s a fall festival. In addition to competitive awards, participants dressed in costume vie for pies and trophies in categories of Cutest, Scariest, Funniest and Best Couple or Group (dogs included.) And bring your best carved pumpkin for a carved pumpkin judging.

There’s also a fitness competition following the race with trophies for the fittest man and woman. Competitors complete a four minute circuit of maximum number of pull-ups, push-ups, dips and box jumps.

Be sure to bring the kids for free fun from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Environmental Center. Activities include monster golf, story time, ring toss and tattoo parlor. Grace particularly recommends the bug petting zoo featuring Archie the giant millipede and various nature activities led by park rangers.

Harrison Hills Halloween Trail 5k/10k is fun with a purpose. Spencer Clark is a council member of Friends of Harrison Hills which provides enhancements to the park. Funds raised will support Scout projects within the park. Past projects include construction of handicapped access ramps, bat and bird boxes and benches throughout the park.

Registration for Harrison Hills Halloween Trail 5k/10k opens at 8 a.m. at the Environmental Learning Center on Chipmunk Drive in the park. Commemorative t-shirts will be in very short supply for walk-ups. There will be a pre-race briefing at 9:45 with the 10k start following at 10 a.m. The 5k starts at 10:10.
