Butler 5th-6th graders use new school center to get fit
Fifth and sixth graders at Butler Middle School are able to squeeze in cycling, playing soccer, volleyball and dancing like Ghostbusters characters — all in a single gym class.
That’s because the school started using its new fitness center, equipped with five Xbox 360 Kinect game consoles, four stationary cycles, and other circuit equipment that allow students to jump, bounce and elevate their heart rates.
Ten-year-old Rhyan Deal said she enjoys the break from the typical gymnasium setting.
“It’s something different instead of being in gym all the time,” she said.
Josh Hundertmark, fifth grade principal, said the previous fitness center at the school was more “adult oriented,” with treadmills and ellipticals.
“For this age level, we really wanted to engage them in the physical activities,” he said.
Students competed with one another on the stationary bikes, attached to screens that project a scene. Meanwhile, at other stations, Kinect sensors follow students’ movements without a controller.
The group rotated stations every five minutes, checking heart rate after each brief exercise and marking whether they reached their target heart rate.
Students come to the fitness center on a rotating basis, visiting it about once a month. All 1,040 fifth and sixth graders at the school have gym class once a week.
