The Freeport girls volleyball team won another section championship and the WPIAL rewarded the Yellowjackets for their effort by giving them the top seed for the Class AA playoffs.
Freeport (14-1) will begin the quest for its first title since 2013 by opening the playoffs against the winner of Quaker Valley and South Park Thursday at home.
Knoch, which got the ninth seed, could meet the Yellowjackets in the quarterfinals if the Knights beat Beaver in their playoff opener at 6 p.m. Thursday at Central Valley.
Seneca Valley received the third seed in Class AAA and will host Moon at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The Grove City High boys soccer team received the No. 3 seed in the District 10 Class AA playoffs and will host Strong Vincent in a first-round game Saturday at a time to be determined.The Slippery Rock High boys team received the No. 5 seed and will host Ft. LeBoeuf Saturday at a time to be determined.The Grove City girls team received a No. 7 seed in the Class AA playoffs and will host Corry Thursday and the Slippery Rock girls, a No. 12 seed, will travel to Warren Thursday.Times for both games and to be determined.
SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock University football team was ranked fourth in the first Super Region 1 rankings released Monday.The top eight teams in each region qualify for the NCAA Division II playoffs. The Rock (7-1) is one of four teams from the PSAC West ranked in the top 10. Clarion, which is 7-1, is ranked sixth; Gannon, which is 6-2 is ranked eighth and Indiana (Pa.) is ranked ninth.Shepherd, Bowie State and Charleston (W.Va.) are all ranked in front of SRU.The Rock has climbed two spots to No. 13 on the AFCA Division II national poll.SRU is one of two Super Region One teams ranked among the AFCA Top 20. Shepherd is at No. 6.
MINNEAPOLIS — Torii Hunter’s Minnesota reunion went about as well as could’ve been expected — for both sides.That’s the way Hunter decided to cap his career, too, as the last of 19 major league seasons.The Twins confirmed that Hunter will retire.Hunter finished with a .240 batting average, 22 home runs and 81 RBIs in 139 games this year. In 2,372 games, Hunter hit .277 with 353 homers and 1,391 RBIs for Minnesota, the Angels and Tigers.
