Gertrude Jean (Welling) Marshall

Gertrude Jean (Welling) Marshall, 103, of West Deer Township passed away Tuesday.

She was born on Oct. 1, 1912, in Ellsworth, Pa., as the middle of 16 children of Charles and Millie (Grey) Welling.

She moved to Cokeburg, Pa., and then to West Deer Township. In 1931, she married her husband, the late Samuel, a World War I veteran and farmer. Sam died in 1966.

She is survived by four children, Clark, Larry, Tom and Arlene; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Gertie loved her Lord. She loved to sing alto in the choir, and she participated in Bible studies. She was a member of the Gospel Fellowship Church for 39 years and before that, the Deer Creek United Presbyterian Church for 42 years.

She loved working with young people, from being a Cub Scout den mother to having backyard bonfires for the church young people. She also liked her sports, especially baseball and football, and she yelled at the TV when the players did not do a good job. She traveled to Europe the odd numbered years from 1971 to 1995 and visited seven countries while there.

MARSHALL — The family of Gertrude Jean (Welling) Marshall, who died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2015, will welcome friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, at Schellhaas Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 5864 Heckert Road, Bakerstown.Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Gospel Fellowship Church, 161 McFann Road, Valencia, with the Rev. Nick Protos officiant.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Gospel Fellow Church, attn: Christian Recreation Program, because Gertie often had young people playing games in her yard at her house.Please offer condolences at www.schellhaasfh.com.
