MUDDY CREEK TWP — Scouts from across Butler, Armstrong, Lawrence and Westmoreland counties totaled 885 volunteer service hours at Moraine State Park during their conservation-themed camporee.

Despite rainy weather, more than 200 scouts attended the event, according to Moraine Trails CEO Ray Tennent, who said he never doubted his scout’s determination.

“Many of these projects were in the planning for two months. Our scouts and leaders are resilient and got the job done regardless of the cold, rainy weather,” Tennent said.

The scouts installed waterfowl education signs, planted tree seedlings and repaired a trail in addition to completing other projects.

Fun activity stations, such as Frisbee golf, fly fishing and tomahawk throwing, were sprinkled in throughout the service projects to give the scouts some rest and down time. Speakers were brought in to educate the scouts about sustainability and the ecosystem.

Dustin Drew, Moraine park manager, said he appreciates the scouts’ effort and the council for organizing the event.

“I was impressed with the determination and work ethic of the scouts,” Drew said.

“I am pleased with the hard work that was put into the camporee and all that was accomplished.”
