Motorists warned about deer
The state Department of Transportation is cautioning drivers to slow down and watch for deer on roads this fall.
PennDOT said in a news release that about half of all traffic accidents involving deer occur in October and November, while 77 percent of those accidents occur between 5 p.m. and 7 a.m.
“Deer are most active from October through November during the peak of their breeding season,” said Joseph Dubovi, District 10 executive for PennDOT. “Due to shorter days, commuters’ time on the road aligns with the increased movements of the deer from dusk to dawn,”
Last year there were 133 accidents involving deer reported in Butler County, resulting in 22 injuries and one fatality.
There were more than 3,300 deer-related crashes statewide last year, with more than 600 injuries and 11 fatalities.
