Driver charged in crash
CENTER TWP — A Butler Township man was charged Tuesday with aggravated assault by vehicle after allegedly causing a crash on Route 8 a month ago that left a woman with major injuries.
An arrest warrant was issued for Domenic M. DeAngelo, 19, who was accused of purposefully running a vehicle driven by Heather N. Brinker, 22, of Slippery Rock off the road as she attempted to pass him just north of Mercer Road, according to court documents.
The accident occurred about 4:15 a.m. on Sept. 27.
Brinker was thrown from her car after it struck an embankment and rolled over. She was not wearing a seat belt.
Brinker was flown by medical helicopter from the scene to UPMC Presbyterian hospital and has since had several surgeries for her injuries, state police said.
A witness who knows both drivers told police that DeAngelo and Brinker know each other.
The witness said DeAngelo chased Brinker’s car after she left the Clearview Mall parking lot that morning.
Brinker told police in a phone interview on Oct. 6 that DeAngelo attempted to hit her vehicle shortly after she left the mall, prompting her to pull off into a parking lot.
When Brinker re-entered the road, DeAngelo was in front of her, continuing to hit his breaks to force her to stop, according to documents.
When Brinker tried to pass DeAngelo, he allegedly drove into her lane and forced her car off the road into an embankment.
The witness also told troopers that DeAngelo ran Brinker off the road as she attempted to pass him.
Police did not say why DeAngelo was allegedly trying to force Brinker’s vehicle to stop.
DeAngelo fled the scene, police said.
He went to the state police barracks later that day and filled out a statement.
When interviewed by police the next day, DeAngelo said Brinker was trying to pass him when he “drifted into the opposite lane” and jammed on his brakes. He said he continued driving after the accident.
DeAngelo also is facing numerous traffic lane violations, as well as careless driving, reckless driving and duty to give information and render aid.
