2 offers made to buy closed schools in Butler district
BUTLER TWP — The Butler School District has received two offers to buy closed elementary school buildings that the district is selling.
Broad Street, Clearfield, Meridian and Oakland elementary schools are on the market.
The school board met in executive session for more than an hour during its regular meeting Monday night to discuss the offers and personnel matters. The board did not take any action on either topic.
Dale Lumley, superintendent, did not go into details regarding the offers, declining to say who made offers or which buildings had the offers.
The school district in June closed five elementary buildings. Center Avenue was closed but it has been repurposed as a special needs and alternative school.
In September, the district received two bids for a couple of the buildings, but the school board rejected those bids.
The Center for Community Resources bid $150,000 for Broad Street and Robert Oesterling bid $100,000 for either Oakland or Clearfield.
CCR wanted to convert Broad Street into a community center. Oesterling was looking to turn one of the schools into a warehouse for his Clarion-based electronic cigarette business.
The district hired two appraisers to appraise the buildings. The averages of the appraisals were $456,500 for Broad Street, $236,000 for Clearfield and $362,500 for Oakland. Meridian, the fourth school being sold, was appraised at $530,000.
