Teen dies in crash

Boy was 18; girls also hurt

PENN TWP — A teenage boy was killed and two girls were injured early Saturday morning in a one-vehicle crash on Meridian Road.

Penn Township police said the accident occurred just after midnight in the 1000 block of the road.

Police said the boy, of Butler Township, was driving a Toyota coupe northbound when the car left the road and struck a tree.

Butler County Deputy Coroner Larry Barr pronounced the teen dead at the scene.

“Speed was a factor,” Barr said. “It had rained before and the car hydroplaned.”

The car crashed into the woods along the road and struck a tree head on.

Barr said the driver, who was wearing a seat belt, died instantly.

One girl in the car was flown by medical helicopter to Allegheny General Hospital. The other female passenger was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital by ambulance.

Their conditions were not available.

Police have not released the names or ages of the victims.

Barr, who did not name the victim, said the boy was 18 — born in 1997.

Barr said he does not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.

There will not be an autopsy done.

Volunteer firefighters from Penn and Butler townships assisted at the scene.

The crash is under investigation.
