Mars project raises more than $1,820
ADAMS TWP — More than $1,820 was raised during the Mars girls varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams' annual Project Pink Planet Oct. 1.
The project features players sporting pink socks and shoelaces and the crowd donning pink clothing for the games as a way to raise funds for the American Cancer Society and breast cancer research. Pink confections were also available in the concession stand.
The players sold T-shirts during the high school's lunch periods on Fridays, and two silent auction baskets were raffled at the games to raise funds.
Event coordinator and volleyball parent Theodora Zika said nearly 400 people attended the games, and music and entertainment was provided by high school musicians and the varsity cheerleading squad.
“We are absolutely thrilled,” Zika said. “Together, we have made a difference in the lives of others.”
Senior volleyball player Alyssa Fenton called Project Pink Planet a worthy event for both the team and community.
“I, personally, have family members who have lost to breast cancer and who have fought and won against this horrible disease,” Alyssa said. “This event's goal is to raise not only funds to help research for a cure, but awareness as well.”
Her teammate, senior Alecia Zika, said Project Pink Planet is special to her because she lost a treasured teacher to breast cancer.
“If something as small as playing a game of volleyball helps future people in the same situation, then it is something I am very proud to do,” Alecia said.
