SR coalition anniversary celebrated
BRADY TWP — The Jennings Environmental Education Center will host activities Saturday to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Slippery Rock Watershed Coalition.
The coalition is a public-private group dedicated to restoring the land, waters and wildlife along 15 miles of streams that are affected by acid mine drainage from abandoned coal mines.
One of the biggest initiatives of the coalition has been the installation of 18 passive treatment systems that collect metals and filter water through natural processes.
Jennings will host two kayak sojourns on the Slippery Rock Creek for ages 14 and older. One will run from 9 a.m. to noon and another from 1 to 4 p.m. Advance registration is required.
There will be two bus tours, one at 9 a.m. and one at 1 p.m., that will feature abandoned mine drainage passive treatment systems. Advance registration for the bus tours also is required.
Free activities are planned at Jennings’ Watershed Science Lab at the education center.
To register, call Jennings at 724-794-6011.
