COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — Colorado Rockies manager Walt Weiss will return to the dugout next season after meeting with General Manager Jeff Bridich.
The Rockies are 208-278 under Weiss, and went 68-94 and finished last in the NL West this season. He has one year left on his contract.
Weiss' players campaigned for his return in the waning days of the season, with third baseman Nolan Arenado saying, “we haven't been able to win. That's not a reflection on him. He's doing a fine job.”
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville campus police now say they are reviewing allegations that a former men's basketball staffer hired escorts to dance and have sex with recruits and players in a dormitory.Katina Powell has alleged in a book released online over the weekend that former Cardinals director of basketball operation Andre McGee paid her $10,000 for dancers to perform 22 shows from 2010-14 at the players' Billy Minardi Hall dormitory. The school reported those allegations to the NCAA and has launched an investigation.It was the first confirmation that police are looking into the allegations.
NEWARK, N.J. — Shortly after Martin Brodeur was selected by the New Jersey Devils with the 20th pick in the 1990 NHL draft, the 18-year-old goaltender was confused.He “didn't know where New Jersey was,” Brodeur recalled with his trademark grin. Twenty-five years later, he and the franchise are permanently linked.The Devils announced they will retire the No. 30 jersey of their longtime goaltender and erect a statue during ceremonies Feb. 9 at the game against the Edmonton Oilers.Brodeur played 21 seasons for New Jersey, leading the Devils to three Stanley Cup titles (1995, 2000, 2003) and winning the Vezina Trophy four times.His jersey will join those of defensemen Scott Stevens, Ken Daneyko and Scott Niedermayer in the rafters.
MIAMI — Ichiro Suzuki signed a $2 million, one-year contract Tuesday to remain with the Miami Marlins in hopes of reaching 3,000 hits.Suzuki, who turns 42 on Oct. 22, is tied for 33rd on Major League Baseball’s hits list with 2,935. He also had 1,278 in Japan.Suzuki had 91 hits in 153 games for the Marlins this year but batted a career-low .229, dropping his career average to .314.
