Basket, Bag Bingo to raise money, honor survivors

FRANKLIN TWP — The American Cancer Society’s Basket and Bag Bingo will reach its first decade Oct. 25 in supporting Butler County breast cancer patients.

Volunteer Toni Grupp of Butler said the event’s date has been pushed back from early October, but the organization again will host the event at the Atrium, 1031 New Castle Road, where over the past nine years it has collected about $54,000 in donations to help fight breast cancer.

Grupp said the event will open at 11 a.m. with lunch at noon and games at 1 p.m. Lunch and 20 regular games are included in the $25 donation.

Additional donations will be accepted, and other special games, auctions and raffles will take place throughout the night.

Grupp said registration is possible, but most people show up the day of the event.

“We have a great following,” she said. “I can never say enough about the support we receive from Butler County.”

On average, more than 100 people attend the event, and last year’s games brought more than 150 participants.

Grupp said cancer survivors will be recognized before the games begin and given a gift. She said the event is not only to raise money, but to honor the strength of survivors as well.

“Cancer affects everyone. You are a cancer survivor from the day you’re diagnosed,” she said.

Grupp said any funds raised will stay in the county for cancer groups such as Road to Recovery, Reach for Recovery and Look Better, Feel Better.
