Movie made in Harmony
HARMONY — The rainy weather Monday put a damper on filming in the borough.
Film crews from Lakeshore Entertainment are here to shoot scenes for “American Pastoral” starring Ewan McGregor, Jennifer Connelly and Dakota Fanning. McGregor, who is also directing the film in his debut, is in the borough for filming along with Connelly.
Rain came down throughout the morning and most of the afternoon. That caused delays in filming scenes, including one near a fake post office built on Mercer Street.
McGregor briefly talked with spectators and took pictures with them during the break in the filming.
Lakeshore scout assistant Alex Case and other crew members said filming for the second day may be postponed from Wednesday to Thursday and Friday due to the continuing rainy weather. The forecast calls for rain all week and temperatures dropping to the 50s.
The second-day filming includes a controlled explosion scene at the mock post office. The explosion is scheduled to take place in the afternoon and the street will be closed.
Work will start around sunrise on both makeup days.
The post office took about eight days to build and was designed to reflect 1950s and 1960s styles.
Borough residents expressed delight about the filming.
“It's awesome. It's great to use a little town,” said Tracey Vaccarella.
“We were wondering how they picked this town,” said Margaret Marmo. “It gives new life to a little town.”
The main entrance to Harmony was closed to general traffic. However, U.S. Liner and garbage trucks were allowed to pass through along with patrons of the Harmony Inn.
Five crossing guards were on hand Monday to assist in traffic control on Main and Mercer streets.
For the movie scenes, about 20 vintage classic cars are being used to fit in with 1950s and 1960s styles. Thirty-six people also were called in to be extras.
“What's cool about it is it all works right here,” said picture car coordinator Ed Coennen about the borough. “You can make it any era.”
Coennen said the production company contacted several classic car clubs to have people volunteer their cars.
“American Pastoral” is based on the 1997 Philip Roth novel of the same name that won a Pulitzer Prize.
The film is expected to be released next year.
