'Home' of zombies expands Halloween activities

EVANS CITY — A new project to bring people to the borough will kick off Oct. 9.

Hallo-Weekends will celebrate Evans City’s connection to the horror movie genre by offering events during three of October’s four weekends.

“Night of the Living Dead” and “The Crazies” were two movies shot in and around Evans City in 1968 and 1972, respectively, and many actors and crew members from those films will be available Oct. 9-11 during the Living Dead Weekend.

Beginning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Oct. 9 at the new Night of the Living Dead historical marker near the library, Living Dead Weekend will kick off Hallo-Weekends.

Screenings of “Night of the Living Dead” and “The Crazies,” arts, crafts and horror stands; zombie carnival games, a ghoul scavenger hunt; pumpkin carving, movie scene tours, a pet walk of the Living Dead costume parade and other events will be included.

Lee Dyer, council president, said the borough should embrace its status as home of the “Night of the Living Dead” because the cult classic flick introduced flesh-eating zombies to the cinematic world.

“So this was the beginning of that genre, and lots of people follow it,” Dyer said.

In addition to the Living Dead Weekend, the monthlong Hallo-Weekends will include a Kiddo Weekend on Oct. 24. Pumpkin carving will be at the Evans City Public Library.

A trunk or treat for costumed children will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. that day in the library parking lot.

Halloween weekend will have residents and visitors participating in the annual Halloween Parade at 6 p.m. Oct. 29 on Main Street.

On Oct. 31, trick or treat will be from 6 to 8 p.m. A children’s Halloween party will be before that at the library.

Mannequins dressed as ghouls will be featured all month in many businesses.

Dyer hopes Hallo-Weekends will catch on.

“We hope to bring people in to see who we are, and introduce them to Evans City,” Dyer said.
