Vacationer arrested after cruise
A Western Pennsylvania man's cruise ended in rough waters Sunday when he was thrown in jail on a warrant out of Butler County.
Christopher M. Main, 28, of Aliquippa, Beaver County was nabbed when the Carnival Pride ship docked in Baltimore at the end of an excursion.
There, authorities were waiting for Main. Little did he know, U.S. Custom and Border Protection officials knew he was wanted on a warrant stemming from his conviction for a 2008 vehicle break-in spree in Cranberry Township and Seven Fields.
Main, who was traveling with a group of tourists, was turned over to Maryland Transportation Authority Police after customs officers advised them that he was a wanted man.
“The last thing a traveler wants to experience after a pleasant vacation cruise is to be arrested,” said Dianna Bowman, CBP Area Port Director for the Port of Baltimore. “The lesson to those with outstanding arrest warrants is to know that Customs and Border Protection officers will identify you upon your arrival to the U.S., and return you to custody to face your charges.”
According to court records, Butler County Judge William Shaffer on Sept. 3 issued a bench warrant for Main's arrest after he failed to appear for an enforcement hearing regarding payments he owed in his 2008 criminal case.
In that case, the defendant pleaded guilty in 2011 to a felony count of theft for breaking into 10 vehicles parked at homes in Cranberry Township and neighboring Seven Fields.
Items taken included electronics, radios, MP3 players, global positioning systems, lap top computers and cash, totaling more $3,000.
Main in 2011 was sentenced to 1 to 2 months in county prison. He also was ordered to pay fines and court costs of $1,220, and restitution of $3,685 to the victims of his crime spree.
In all, he still owes $4,398, court records showed.
Main is to appear Wednesday in Maryland court.
It was not immediately known if he has an attorney.
