County considers buying computer tablets for inmates

The Butler County Prison may consider getting computer tablets for inmates.

Warden Joe DeMore told the prison board Tuesday that the company Securus leases the tablets for $20 per month. If the prison issues them to inmates and charges $25 per month, the prison could make $5 per inmate.

The tablets would not have conventional Internet access, but would give inmates access to items such as an electronic law library and religious materials. Additionally, he said it would allow inmates to stream music and have access to job boards.

DeMore said the tablets would be good for inmates, saying that it would give them more to do than play cards or watch television — each pod has only two televisions. He said that access to music is a popular request since there are no radios on the pods.

He said that the officer would have a master tablet at the central command part of each pod. If a pod is reported stolen, the officer can disable that particular tablet. Officers also would be able to track each tablet.

DeMore said this likely will be discussed at other meetings.
