NEW YORK — After winning her first Grand Slam title at age 33, while seeded 26th, by beating the woman who beat Serena Williams, Flavia Pennetta provided this U.S. Open full of surprises with one last twist.
After meeting her opponent, Roberta Vinci, at the net for a long hug after — both from the southern heel of Italy’s boot, they were childhood friends, then doubles partners and roommates as teens — Pennetta let Vinci in on a little secret that would soon be shared with the world.
Pennetta — who beat Vinci 7-6 (4), 6-2 — decided about a month ago she would be retiring after this season.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz homered twice Saturday to become the 27th player in major league history to reach 500 homers.
With an overflow crowd in the right-field stands on their feet and chanting “Let’s go Papi!,” Ortiz reached the milestone when he lined a shot to right-center on a 2-2 pitch from Matt Moore leading off the fifth. He connected for No. 499 in the first.
Big Papi has 50 multihomer games in a 19-year career. He joined Albert Pujols as the only players to hit both 499 and 500 in the same game.
Ortiz said the fan, who didn’t want to be identified, gave him the memento. The Red Sox gave the young man wearing a Baltimore Orioles shirt what Ortiz called a very nice package of items including a Red Sox shirt.
