James H. Hiles

James H. Hiles, 81, of Pine Ridge Drive, Chicora, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday morning while surrounded by his family at his home.

James was born Sept. 27, 1933, in Kaylor. He was the son of the late Charles H. and Savilla Harmon Hiles.

Jim was a graduate of East Brady High School and was a longtime active member of St. Paul's Community Church in Sugarcreek Township, where he had served as an elder.

He was a member of the Argyle Lodge 540 F&AM of Chicora. He was a well-known auctioneer and collector of antiques. He had owned and operated the Old Mule Barn and Hiles Mercantile, both in Chicora.

Jim enjoyed going to yard sales, feeding birds and gardening.

He retired following 41 years of service at AK Steel, formerly Armco, in Butler.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, serving in the Army Medical Corp in Korea and Japan.

James was preceded in death by his wife, Carole A. Moyer Hiles, on Oct. 4, 2014. The couple was married at St. Paul's Church in Chicora on Aug. 4, 1956.

He is survived by four children, Carmel A. Swartz and her husband, Dr. John F. Swartz, of Monkey Island, Okla., Chris A. Hiles and his wife, Laura, of Butler, Jamie D. Miller and her husband, Kevin, of Chicora and Jackie Garing and her husband, Brian, of Karns City; 12 grandchildren, Lauren Thompson and her husband, Dustin, of Pikeville, Ky., 1st Lt. Corey Swartz and his wife, Taylor, of Altus, Okla., Erin Swartz of Monkey Island, Okla., Cody Hiles of Pittsburgh, Dylan Hiles of Butler, Ashley Miller, Brooke Miller, Shane Miller and Seth Miller, all of Chicora, Lance Cpl. Jesse Garing and his fiance, Brittany Goslaw, of Butler and Adam Garing and Caleb Garing of Karns City; two great-grandchildren, Jesslyn and Jaxsen Thompson of Pikeville, Ky.; two sisters, Maxine Korb of Chicora and Margery Terwilliger of East Brady; as well as a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Hiles was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Hiles, and a step-grandson, Luke Womer.

JAMES — Friends of James H. Hiles, who died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2015, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Hile Funeral Home of Chicora, 339 Chicora Fenelton Road, Chicora, and from 3 to 4 p.m. Friday at St. Paul's Community Church, 2167 SR 268, Chicora, where a funeral service will follow at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Ryan Lucas, interim church pastor, officiating.Military honors will be provided by the Chicora American Legion and VFW posts and the Bradys Bend and East Brady American Legion posts at the church.
