The drive for 110 begins.

It's a new year and that means at least 10 weeks of high school football picks — and most likely several more because Butler County has some pretty good football teams this year as in every year.

My goal with the addition of Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic to our coverage area is 110 wins.

I came very close last season, going 106-23. That's an .822 winning percentage — just good enough to edge the Cardinals and win the NL Central.

It's always a challenge to pick games early in the season because of all the unknowns, but I'm going to try to go perfect:

Butler 22, Altoona 14 — The Golden Tornado will get off to a good start at home. Altoona graduated 18 starters and Butler just needs to avoid an early 21-0 deficit that plagued it in last year's opener.

North Allegheny 32, Seneca Valley 17 — With a new coach, it's hard to get a feel for the Raiders. NA, though, always seems to be good.

Opening with a rival on the road? Tough draw.

Franklin Regional 22, Knoch 13 — The Knights are also a bit of an enigma. Knoch has a knack, though, of keeping every game close.

This one should be physical with mistakes playing a big factor in the outcome.

Mars 25, Indiana 20 — The Planets don't rebuild. They reload.

Cardinal Wuerl 33, Northgate 9 — The Trojans have a new coach and a chip on their shoulder after losing in the WPIAL semifinals last year.

Freeport 28, Shady Side Academy 20 — The Yellowjackets could be scary good this season, especially on defense.

Karns City 39, Brookville 8 — Speaking of reloading, the Gremlins have that down to a science. The players change, but the “Gremlin Way” stays the same: winning.

Moniteau 24, Punxsutawney 16 — The Warriors have a new quarterback in Derek Boben and some weapons around him. Moniteau could also be a scary team this season.

A win here would be a real confidence builder.

Slippery Rock 43, Perry 21 — The Rockets are perhaps the most predictable thing around these days. Slippery Rock will run the football and play a swarming, intimidating defense.

Grove City 26, Wilmington 21 — The Eagles will be fun to watch this season and they will build on their strong finish in 2014.

Union 24, Keystone 16 — While we are on the fun-to-watch subject, is there anyone more explosive than Union's Cole Morris?

Clarion 46, A-C Valley 8 — The Falcons are fighting for their life as a program.

Highlands 33, Summit Academy 14 — And the ultimate unknown every year is Summit Academy. This is just a wild guess.

As are most of my predictions, it seems.
