GROVE CITY — Grove City College’s women’s cross country team has been declared the unanimous preseason favorite in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.
The Wolverines received all 10 first-place votes in the preseason coaches poll. Grove City is coming off its 26th straight PAC team title and has produced 13 of the last 16 conference individual champions.
Nine-time PAC Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year Sean Severson is back for his 12th season at the helm.
NEW YORK — Yankees rookie pitcher Bryan Mitchell was hit in the head by a line drive Monday night, forcing him off the field with a towel over his bloody face.The Yankees said he was taken to a hospital, but didn't give a report on his condition.Mitchell was struck in the second inning by a liner off the bat of Eduardo Nunez of the Minnesota Twins at Yankee Stadium.The 24-year-old pitcher was knocked down, and the ball caromed into center field for a single. The Yankees and their medical staff quickly rushed to the mound.
PHILADELPHIA — Danny Briere, the undersized center who went on to become an NHL All-Star and keyed the Philadelphia Flyers' run to the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals, has retired.Briere ended a 17-year career on Monday. He had 307 goals and 389 assists for 696 career points. Briere had 116 points (53 goals) in 124 playoff games.
