Site plan OK'd for Freeport football field

Approval is conditional

BUFFALO TWP — The township supervisors Wednesday approved the site plan for the new Freeport High School athletic stadium.

They voted for the new home of the Yellowjackets, which will be on the high school’s campus just south of the track. For the football team, it will replace Swartz Field in Freeport.

The stadium, which is expected to cost $2.6 to $3 million, will have a turf surface and will seat 2,000 fans. It will host games for the football team as well as girls and boys soccer and girls lacrosse.

Supervisor John Haven, chairman, said township officials approved the plan conditionally. The supervisors have not seen the plans for the structures at the stadium, so they will need to see the plans for items such as the bleachers and light posts.

Haven said having the stadium so close to so many businesses along Route 356 will be good for the township.

“When the people come out of the stadium, most of our restaurants will still be open,” he said.

Haven said he will miss going to games at the former stadium, but said that times change.

Dan Lucovich, president of the Freeport School Board, said the approval is “absolutely” exciting. He said the stadium will be able to handle multiple sports, and said that the turf field will be beneficial.

“Artificial turf will be a blessing,” Lucovich said.

The stadium is being designed by VEBH Architects of Pittsburgh.

Lucovich said the school district will have a special meeting Wednesday to finalize all of the plans and then will put the project out to bid. He hopes construction could begin in September, adding the district hopes the stadium is ready for the 2016-2017 school year.

The school board in December voted to build the new stadium on campus rather than renovate the field in Freeport.

The Yellowjackets have played at Swartz Field since the 1920s. Lucovich said the district is planning on some sort of closing ceremony at the field for the final football game this fall.

The supervisors also on Wednesday voted to approve the site plan for a small strip center at Route 356 and Rambler Drive.

Ronald Rukas of Rukas Development LLC is planning for two storefronts to be in the project, which is on 1.73 acres.

Construction is expected to begin before winter, as long as everything is in place.
