Man allegedly steals grandma's coin collection
CHICORA — A Butler man is accused of breaking into his grandmother’s house and stealing her valuable coin collection.
Anthony S. Dorenkamp, 24, admitted he was high on drugs when he committed the crime last month but could not remember how many coins he took, state police said.
Soon after the alleged break-in and theft, authorities said, Dorenkamp ended up at a hospital after suffering an apparent heroin overdose in Butler Township.
District Judge Lewis Stoughton on Thursday arraigned him on felony charges of burglary, trespass and theft, and a misdemeanor charge of receiving stolen property.
Stoughton set Dorenkamp’s bail at $30,000.
He has been in the Butler County Prison since Aug. 4 when he was arrested for a probation violation and for not paying child support, authorities said.
Police suspect Dorenkamp on July 5 or 6 entered his grandmother’s house on West Slippery Rock Street through an unlocked window, according to court documents.
Dorenkamp made off with collectible coins valued at $9,000 to $10,000, police said. It didn’t take long for police to track down his whereabouts.
At 9:50 p.m. July 6, Butler Township police found Dorenkamp unconscious in a vehicle at the Tanglewood Center parking lot.
Officers searched him and found suspected heroin and two unspecified prescription pills, according to a police report. Additionally, the search turned up three collectible coins belonging to his grandmother.
Dorenkamp was revived and taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for treatment.
A week later, township police charged him with two counts of possession of a controlled substance and one count each of possession of drug paraphernalia and public drunkenness.
State police investigators on Aug. 6 interviewed Dorenkamp, who gave a disjointed confession in the burglary case. He blamed his confusion in re-telling the break-in on having been on drugs when he committed the crime, police said.
