Center seeks bids for building
CENTER TWP — The township is marketing its former municipal building for sale.
The township supervisors said Wednesday night that they will put the property at 419 Sunset Drive out to bid. They expect to have bids due in November.
The township in late July relocated secretary Anthony Amendolea to his new office in the public works building at 150 Hendricks Road. Amendolea is the only full-time employee in the township’s office.
“The move went well,” said Supervisor Philip Wulff. “We still have some signage to complete, but the move is mostly finished.”
The board had its first meeting at the Unionville Volunteer Fire Company on Wednesday. It previously had meetings at the Sunset Drive building.
Supervisors voted Wednesday to begin advertising the sale of the Sunset Drive building.
A market study was done on the property a couple years ago that supervisors said provided a good estimate on how much it is worth.
“We have a general idea of its value,” said Chairman Ed Latuska. “But we didn’t get a formal appraisal.”
An appraisal is required for the township to buy property, but not when it is selling, said solicitor Michael Gallagher.
Wulff said the township is not obligated to accept any bid that comes in.
“We have the right to reject them,” he said. “But hopefully we get a good offer in November.”
Supervisors did not comment on what the market study estimated the value of the property.
Wulff said the township can lease the property to prospective tenants if it doesn’t fetch a good offer.
“We’re not going to just give it away,” he said.
The Sunset Drive building is about 1,800 square feet on about an acre.
The supervisors said the public works building meets the American Disability Act, could have a more secure entrance, is fire protected, has emergency power, provides better access for vendors, is closer to employees and is not being used to its potential.
The cost to move the secretary’s office was capped at $10,000.
While the public works building can support the township secretary, it is not suitable to hold public meetings. Wulff said it could be renovated to incorporate a meeting room.
Township officials accepted an offer from the volunteer fire company made earlier this year to use its station for public meetings.
