STATE COLLEGE — A Pennsylvania beauty queen has been jailed on charges she faked having leukemia to benefit from fundraisers, and she will be stripped of her title.

Online court records show 23-year-old Brandi Lee Weaver-Gates of State College was arraigned Tuesday on charges of theft by deception and receiving stolen property. State police say an April bingo benefit raised $14,000 for the Miss Pennsylvania U.S. International pageant winner. Troopers are asking the public to come forward if they have donated money to Weaver-Gates.

Butler's Beauties, the company that sponsors the pageant, says in a Facebook page statement that they were also “led to believe that she was dealing with this horrible disease” and are making her return her crown and sash.

Weaver-Gates faces a preliminary hearing Aug. 19.

PHILADELPHIA — The principal of a suburban Philadelphia Catholic school plans to hold a meeting with parents next month about a gay teacher fired over her same-sex marriage.A Philadelphia newspaper says Waldron Mercy Academy principal Nell Stetser acknowledged the decision not to renew Margie Winters' contract “continues to cause a great deal of pain and heartfelt questioning.”The principal says a separate meeting will also be held for the Waldron community to speak with the school's leadership.Archbishop Charles Chaput and the Sisters of Mercy support the firing, saying it's consistent with church doctrine.
