Isolated storm damages structures in West Sunbury area

CLAY TWP — A short-lived but strong storm damaged eight structures, some severely, on Route 308.

West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department Chief Reid Campbell said the storm occurred at about 10 p.m. Monday, and the damaged was confined to an area about three-quarters of a mile south of West Sunbury.

“It all happened in one small area,” Campbell said.

The Butler County Communications Center said there was no other damage in the county.

He said that the damage ranged from shingles being taken off a roof to one house being “totally destroyed,” with the roof being taken off and exterior walls blown down.

Campbell said that house was vacant, and reported no injuries from the storm.

Wind picked up a metal carport and moved it, and destroyed a business sign. Additionally, he said that several trees and wires were downed.

He said that heavy wind displaced objects in a manner similar to a microburst or small tornado.

“Stuff that was over here is over there,” Campbell said.

He said West Penn Power quickly restored power to the area. Although Red Cross officials came on scene to offer temporary shelter, Campbell said residents chose to stay in their homes.

Firefighters went back into service at about 1 a.m.

About 17 Central Electric Cooperative customers in the West Sunbury area had power cut off by the storm, when a tree was uprooted and broke a utility pole on Kuzma Road.

Company spokesman Chris O’Donnell said the power outage lasted from 9 to 11 p.m. Monday night.
