City man jailed after alleged knife attack

A Butler man is in prison on charges he cut another man with a knife during a weekend altercation at an apartment building in the 400 block of North Washington Street, city police said.

Russell E. Smith Jr., 32, was arrested on felony assault and other charges following the alleged attack late Saturday night.

Police were called about 11:55 p.m. for a fight involving weapons, according to court documents. The alleged victim, Sean McCullough, ended up cut on the left side of his face and under his right armpit.

McCullough, 35, of Butler told officers that he was visiting friends at the apartment building where Smith also lives.

The defendant and victim got into an apparent disagreement during which Smith “pulled out a knife and began swinging it (at McCullough),” according to a police affidavit.

The extent of his injuries was not immediately known but he did not seek hospital treatment, police said.

District Judge Sue Haggerty arraigned Smith on charges of aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and public drunkenness. He was placed in the Butler County Prison on $25,000 bail following arraignment.
