Mistaken identity leads to drug arrest

Police say heroin found in search

A case of momentary mistaken identity proved serendipitous for Butler police.

It proved a tough break for Donald J. Hutchinson, 23, of Butler, who ended up in prison on felony and other drug charges.

Police were investigating an unrelated criminal case when they came upon Hutchinson walking on South Chestnut Street about 6 p.m. Thursday. From a distance, an officer initially believed the man was Hutchinson’s brother, who they were looking for in connection with the investigation, according to court documents.

Police, however, soon learned that the ”wrong guy” was wanted on a bench warrant. He was searched and arrested.

The search, police said, turned up 19 stamp bags of suspected heroin in one pants pocket and a small bag of suspected marijuana and a wad of bills totaling $500 in another pocket.

District Judge Sue Haggerty arraigned Hutchinson on charges of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and possession of a small amount of marijuana.

A convicted drug felon, Hutchinson is being held in Butler County Prison on $50,000 bail.

His preliminary hearing was tentatively scheduled for 8:45 a.m. Monday.
