Closed section of Harmony Trail reopens for public use

Portion was shut for month-plus

HARMONY — After more than a month of being closed off to walkers and joggers, the Harmony Trail has been reopened for public use.

Borough solicitor Matt Racunas said he and council members worked with property owner Don Rodgers and his attorneys to have portions of the trail reopened that don’t pose a threat to people’s safety.

“We’re glad to have it back open,” council President Greg Such. “It’s a scenic area and is pretty popular.”

The trail, part of the historic Washington’s Trail, runs through Rodgers’ property by Creekside Manor, which is being filled in with dirt by Rodgers and JTC1422 Associates. Rodgers closed the trail in late June for safety reasons.

Racunas said as long as trail users don’t veer off into the construction zone, they should be fine.

Racunas said Rodgers’ lawyer expressed concern about trespassing signs posted at each end of the trail.

“It was explained that those are just to make sure people don’t wander off the trail into the development area,” Racunas said.

The property has been owned by Rodgers for about a decade. Rodgers is now dealing with the development of the upcoming Murphy Tractor store by Route 19.

Rodgers has an easement agreement with the borough that allows for people to travel through.

Such said the trail is a popular area for people who want their daily exercise and to walk their pets, and that it’s closing was “inconvenient.”

There were also concerns that security cameras would be installed to catch trespassers on video. However, council members said they didn’t see any cameras on the trail.

Completion of filling in the area has been pushed back to September.
